I sought to capture the duality of the experience: the thin line between a tragic ending and a successful start.
There is no boat here. By leaving the physical craft out of the frame, I create room for the viewer to navigate the piece through their own memory.
By removing the boat, I remove the tragedy and the triumph, leaving only the water and the human spirit. It is an invitation for the viewer to bring their own history to the surface—to decide if these waves represent a beginning or an end.
This is a subject that touches every Cuban heart, directly or indirectly. I wanted to honor that collective weight without dictate how it should feel. It is a portrait of an event with multiple endings.
